Michael is not a human saint but an archangel, one of the three angels named in Scripture. The Book of Daniel calls him the great prince who protects God's people, the Letter of Jude names him an archangel, and in the Book of Revelation he leads the angels of heaven against the dragon. His feast on 29 September is shared with Gabriel and Raphael.
His name is a question in Hebrew: Who is like God? Painters show him as a young warrior in armour, with wings, a sword or spear raised, standing over the defeated dragon or devil. Sometimes he also holds scales, weighing souls. The prayer to Saint Michael composed by Pope Leo XIII is still said in many parishes.
