Augustine was born in 354 at Thagaste in North Africa, the son of Saint Monica. A gifted teacher of rhetoric, he spent years chasing success and pleasure before his conversion in Milan in 386. He was baptised by Saint Ambrose, returned to Africa, became Bishop of Hippo and died there in 430 while the Vandals besieged the city.
His Confessions, the story of his restless search for God, is still read everywhere, and his City of God shaped Christian thought for a thousand years. He wrote, "Our heart is restless until it rests in you." Painters show him as a bishop with a book and pen, sometimes holding a burning heart.
For anyone who came to faith late, argued with it for years, or is still searching. Augustine proves that a clever, restless heart can become a great saint, and his prayers have followed many prodigal sons home.
