Dominic de Guzmán was born in Castile around 1170 and became a priest of the cathedral at Osma. Travelling through southern France, he saw how poorly the Church answered the Albigensian heresy and set out to preach by learning, poverty and example. The Order of Preachers was approved in 1216. He died in Bologna in 1221.
He is remembered as the founder of the Dominicans, whose friars have included Thomas Aquinas, and tradition links him with the Rosary. Painters show him in a white habit and black cloak, often with a lily, a book, a star on his forehead or a dog carrying a burning torch.
