Joan was born around 1412 to a farming family in Domrémy, in eastern France. Guided by voices she said were Saints Michael, Catherine and Margaret, she persuaded the dauphin to let her ride with his army, and in 1429 helped lift the siege of Orléans. Captured the next year, she was tried by a church court under English control and burned at Rouen in 1431, aged nineteen.
A later inquiry declared her trial invalid in 1456, and she was canonised in 1920. She is remembered for her courage in battle, her plain answers to judges who tried to trap her, and her trust in God at the stake. Painters show her in armour with a banner or sword, or listening to her voices.
