Saint Gerard Majella

Born in 1726 at Muro Lucano in southern Italy, Gerard was a frail boy who worked as a tailor's apprentice and as a servant to a bishop. The Capuchins turned him away for poor health, but the Redemptorists accepted him as a lay brother. He died of tuberculosis at Materdomini in 1755, aged twenty-nine, and was canonised in 1904.

When a young woman falsely accused him of misconduct, he kept silent until she took the accusation back. Many wonders were told of him, and a handkerchief he left with a family was later credited with helping a woman through a dangerous labour, which is why mothers ask for him. He is shown in the black Redemptorist habit, holding a crucifix.
