An archangel in Hell
Raphael was about twenty when he painted this small panel, and he filled it with things: Michael in blue and gold armour, his foot on the dragon's neck and his sword up; a city burning on the horizon; and, in the landscape around him, the damned of Dante's Inferno — the hypocrites in their leaden cloaks trudging in file at the left, the thieves attacked by serpents at the right. It is a Saint Michael and a little illustrated Dante at once, painted for the court of Urbino, which loved both.
In 1518 Raphael painted a second, huge Saint Michael for the King of France; that one is in the Louvre too. This is the early, strange, brilliant one.
