Saul of Tarsus was a Pharisee who persecuted the first Christians until, as the Acts of the Apostles tells, the risen Christ spoke to him on the road to Damascus. Baptised as Paul, he became the apostle to the Gentiles, travelling across the Mediterranean to found churches. Tradition holds that he was beheaded in Rome under Nero.
His letters to the churches he founded make up a large part of the New Testament and are among its earliest writings. His conversion is kept as a feast on 25 January, and he shares 29 June with Peter. Painters show him with a sword and a book, often balding with a long beard, or thrown to the ground on the Damascus road.
Paul is the great example of a life turned around completely, and of faith carried to people who had never heard it. A patron for a confirmation candidate who wants to think hard about the faith and share it.
