Saint Teresa of Calcutta

Born to an Albanian family in Skopje in 1910, she joined the Loreto Sisters and taught in Calcutta for nearly twenty years. In 1948 she left the convent to live among the city's poorest, and two years later founded the Missionaries of Charity to care for the dying, the abandoned and the sick. She died in Calcutta in 1997.
Her letters, published after her death, showed that for decades she felt God's absence in prayer and carried on regardless. She was canonised in 2016. She is always shown as the world knew her: a small woman in a white sari with blue borders, a crucifix at her shoulder and her hands joined or reaching out.
