The Gospels do not name the parents of the Virgin Mary. The names Anne and Joachim come from the Protoevangelium of James, written in the second century, which tells of a devout couple who waited many years for a child. Devotion to Anne grew first in the East and spread west through the Middle Ages.
She is remembered as the grandmother of Jesus and the woman who raised the Mother of God. Painters show her teaching the young Mary to read from a book, or seated with Mary and the Christ Child in a group of three. Her shrine at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec has drawn pilgrims since the seventeenth century.
A natural choice for a grandmother or mother, and for any girl named Anne or Anna. Her holiness was lived out at home, in the ordinary work of raising a daughter well, which is where most faith is first handed on.
