According to the Gospels, Mary of Magdala was a disciple from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons, and who followed him and helped provide for him. She stood at the foot of the cross, and on Easter morning she was the first to see the risen Christ, who sent her to tell the apostles. In 2016 her memorial was raised to a feast.
The Church calls her the apostle to the apostles. In the West, tradition long identified her with the repentant woman who anointed Jesus' feet, so painters show her with long loose hair and a jar of ointment, often weeping or at prayer, or reaching towards Christ in the garden.
She was the first witness of the Resurrection and she loved Christ without holding anything back. A patron for anyone starting over, and for a girl or woman who wants a saint of great devotion and courage.
