Benedict was born at Nursia in Umbria around 480 and sent to study in Rome, which he left to live as a hermit in a cave at Subiaco. Others gathered round him, and he founded monasteries, the most famous at Monte Cassino. He died there around 547. His life comes to us through Saint Gregory the Great.
He is remembered for his Rule, which he called a little rule for beginners, and which shaped monastic life in the West for fifteen centuries. Painters show him as an abbot in a black habit with the Rule and a crozier, often with a broken cup or a raven, from the stories of attempts to poison him.
