Saint Clare of Assisi

Clare was born to a noble family in Assisi in 1194. At eighteen, moved by the preaching of Francis, she left home by night and gave herself to a life of poverty. She founded the order now called the Poor Clares at San Damiano and lived there until her death in 1253, two days after the Pope approved her Rule.
When soldiers attacked San Damiano, she is said to have met them with the Blessed Sacrament and they withdrew. Once, too ill to leave her bed on Christmas night, she saw and heard the Mass as though present, which is why Pius XII named her patron of television. Painters show her in the plain habit of her order, holding a monstrance.
