Jerome was born around 347 in Dalmatia and educated in Rome, where he was baptised. He lived for a time as a hermit in the Syrian desert, learning Hebrew, then served Pope Damasus in Rome, who asked him to revise the Latin Gospels. He spent his last thirty-odd years in a monastery in Bethlehem and died there in 420.
His great work is the Vulgate, the Latin Bible the Church read for more than a thousand years, much of it translated from the Hebrew. He wrote that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. Painters show him in his study or doing penance in the wilderness, with a lion, a skull and a cardinal's red hat.
Jerome suits a reader, a linguist or anyone who loves the Bible and is not always easy to live with. He was famously sharp-tongued, and gave his life to making God's word readable for ordinary people.
