Cecilia was a Roman martyr of the early centuries, and her name is said at Mass in the Roman Canon. The story of her life was written down long after her death and mixes history with legend: a noblewoman who converted her husband Valerian, and was martyred for her faith. Her church in Trastevere stands on the site traditionally held to be her house.
The legend says that at her wedding, while the instruments played, she sang in her heart to God alone, and from that line she became the patron of music. Painters show her at a small organ or with a lute or viol, often crowned with flowers, sometimes with angels listening.
