Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles. Luke names him Jude of James, and tradition identifies him with the Thaddeus of Matthew and Mark. The short Letter of Jude in the New Testament is traditionally ascribed to him. Tradition also holds that he preached with Saint Simon and was martyred with him, and the two share a feast.
He is remembered as the saint to turn to when every other door has closed. He is usually painted holding an image of Christ's face on a medallion, sometimes with a small flame above his head for Pentecost, and often with a club or an axe, the instrument of the martyrdom tradition gives him.
Jude is the apostle people go to when things seem beyond help, and generations have found him faithful there. For a confirmation candidate he is a reminder that no situation puts a person out of God's reach.
