Pier Giorgio Frassati was born in Turin in 1901, the son of the owner of the Turin newspaper La Stampa. He studied mining engineering, climbed mountains, joined Catholic Action and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and quietly spent his allowance on the poor. He caught polio, probably from the sick he visited, and died in 1925 at twenty-four.
At his funeral the streets filled with poor people his family had never heard of, and only then did they learn what he had been doing. He was canonised with Carlo Acutis on 7 September 2025. He is pictured as the photographs show him: a young man in climbing clothes, on a mountainside, sometimes with a pipe.
