A heart pierced by love
Augustine sits in his study with an open book, and his heart has been struck by an arrow. It comes from a small vision of the Trinity appearing in a cloud: three identical faces for Father, Son and Spirit. The image comes from Augustine’s Confessions — “You pierced our hearts with the arrow of your love” — and the arrow became his emblem.
A small panel
The panel is tiny, only about half a metre wide, and probably formed part of the predella beneath a larger altarpiece. Its compactness suits the subject: a private moment of illumination in a small, quiet room.
The Hermitage
It is now in the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, one of the relatively few Florentine fifteenth-century panels in Russian collections.
