The Tribute Money by Masaccio: what it depicts
The Tribute Money by Masaccio
Three moments, one wall
The tax collector has asked for the temple tax, and the story happens three times across the wall. In the centre Christ tells Peter to go to the lake; at the far left Peter crouches at the water and takes the coin from the fish's mouth; at the right he hands it over. The middle group is the picture: a ring of apostles in heavy cloaks, each with a real face and real weight on his feet, standing in air that seems to have temperature. Nothing this solid had been painted since antiquity.
The Brancacci Chapel
Painted around 1425 in Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, with Masolino; Masaccio died three years later, aged twenty-six. Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael all came to draw here. The frescoes were cleaned in the 1980s and the colours are now the ones he painted.
