A ray through the wall
Mary kneels at her prie-dieu in a room so richly furnished — books, a candlestick, a peacock on the loggia above — that it takes a moment to see the thin gold line coming down from the sky, through a hole in the wall, to her head. Outside in the street Gabriel kneels, and beside him, holding a model of the town on his knee, is Saint Emidius, patron of Ascoli Piceno: he has stopped the archangel to put in a word for the city. In the foreground, an apple and a cucumber, painted so exactly you could pick them up.
The picture celebrates a real event. In 1482 the pope granted Ascoli self-government, the news arriving on the feast of the Annunciation; Libertas Ecclesiastica is written along the bottom.

Painted in 1486 for the church of the Annunciation in Ascoli, removed to the Brera in Milan in 1811 under Napoleonic rule, and in the National Gallery since 1864.
