Three protectors
At the centre, Saint Christopher, a giant with a staff, carries the Christ Child on his shoulders; according to legend, he ferried travellers across a river and one day found the child on his shoulders growing heavier than the whole world. On one side stands Saint Roch, showing the plague sore on his thigh; on the other, Saint Sebastian, pierced with arrows. Christopher protected against sudden death, Roch and Sebastian against plague. Together they offered the faithful complete protection.
The shrine at Loreto
The picture was painted for the Holy House of Loreto, the great Marian shrine on the Adriatic coast, visited by pilgrims from all over Europe — many of them travellers facing just the dangers these saints guarded against. Lotto lived at Loreto at the end of his life and died there as a lay brother of the shrine.
Lotto’s humanity
Characteristically, Lotto gives the saints individual, worried, almost everyday faces, rather than idealised grandeur.

The canvas is in the Museo Pontificio della Santa Casa in Loreto and measures 275 by 240 centimetres.
