The painter without errors
Vasari called Andrea del Sarto senza errori, the painter without mistakes, and this picture shows why. The Virgin stands on a pedestal like a statue, the Child on her arm reaching for her neck, two small angels at her feet; Francis at the left with his crucifix, John at the right with his Gospel. The colours are Florentine and grave — rose, violet, dull gold — and the figures have a stillness that Raphael had and almost nobody else did.
The harpies are the little winged creatures carved on the pedestal; some scholars think they are actually the locusts of the Apocalypse, which John saw.
Florence
Painted in 1517 for the convent of San Francesco dei Macci and acquired in the early 1700s by Grand Prince Ferdinando de’ Medici, who restored the convent church in exchange; in the Uffizi since 1795.
