Dürer painted this in 1504, the year before his second journey to Venice, and it already has everything he had learned from the Italians — perspective, a ruined classical arch, a landscape running back to blue mountains — set down with a German exactness in the beetle on the step and every brick of the ruin. The Magi are three ages of man: the old king kneels, the middle one stands in green (Dürer's own face, he could not resist), the young African king, in a dark blue cloak and red hose, waits his turn with his gift.
Frederick the Wise of Saxony commissioned it for the castle church at Wittenberg. In 1603 it went to the Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, and in 1792 the Habsburgs traded it to the Uffizi, where it has stayed.
Made from the Google Arts & Culture capture of the panel, 3,848 pixels wide.
