The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder: what it depicts
The Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Built on the Colosseum
Bruegel had been to Rome, and his tower is the Colosseum spun upward — tier on tier of round arches, cranes and scaffolds on every level, cloud drifting through the top. Look closer and it is already failing: the left side leans, the arches are not level, whole sections are unfinished while others are inhabited. In the foreground King Nimrod, who ordered it, receives the kneeling stonemasons. Behind, a Flemish harbour full of ships goes about its business.
Genesis says the builders wanted a tower to heaven so they would not be scattered; God confused their tongues and scattered them. Bruegel paints the pride and the impossibility in one structure, and makes it beautiful.
Vienna
Painted in 1563, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum since it passed from the Habsburg collection. A smaller version is in Rotterdam.
