The Small Cowper Madonna by Raphael: what it depicts
The Small Cowper Madonna by Raphael
As simple as it gets
Two figures, a landscape, a sky. Mary sits on a bench before a low wall with the Child on her knee, his arm around her neck; she looks past him, he looks at us. There is nothing in the picture that is not needed, and the sweetness of it — the reason Raphael Madonnas were so widely reproduced in the nineteenth century — is that the sweetness is not forced. The church on the hill is probably San Bernardino, near Urbino, the burial church of the dukes of Urbino.
The Cowper Madonnas
It is called Small to distinguish it from the Large Cowper Madonna, both once owned by the third Earl Cowper, who acquired them in Florence; this one was bought around 1780. Both are now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, where this one came with the Widener collection in 1942.
About this print
Made from a very large reproduction of the panel, 16,521 pixels tall, gated for the size ladder as if it were half that; every size offered is well inside what it can carry.
