The Procession to Calvary by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

The Procession to Calvary by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Find him

One of Bruegel's largest paintings is a crowd, and the point is that the crowd is not paying attention. Soldiers in red coats, peddlers, children, a woman with a basket, a cart, dogs; a windmill perched on a sheer crag at the left; on the right, the place of execution with the ring of onlookers already gathering. In the exact centre, fallen under the cross, is Christ — small, grey, almost lost. Only the group in the foreground, Mary and John and the holy women, drawn larger and in the old Flemish manner, are grieving. Everybody else is just there.

It is Flanders in 1564, under Spanish rule, and the executions were real. Bruegel put the Passion into the world he lived in and let the viewer find it.

Vienna

Listed in 1566 among the Bruegels of the Antwerp collector Nicolaes Jonghelinck, it was in Emperor Rudolf II's collection in Prague by 1604 and is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, which holds the largest group of Bruegels anywhere.
