The Mystic Nativity by Sandro Botticelli: what it depicts
The Mystic Nativity by Sandro Botticelli
Heaven and earth, joined
Above the stable twelve angels dance in a ring under an opening of gold. In front of it three angels embrace three men, and small devils scuttle away into cracks in the ground. At the centre, drawn larger than everything around her in the old medieval way, Mary kneels before the Child. It is a Nativity that is also a picture of the end of the world — the Greek inscription at the top speaks of "the troubles of Italy" and the loosing of the devil in Revelation.
Botticelli after Savonarola
Botticelli painted this in 1500, two years after Savonarola was burned in the Piazza della Signoria. The friar's preaching had turned the painter of the Birth of Venus toward a fierce, plain, backward-looking style, and this is its masterpiece. It is the only work Botticelli ever signed and dated.
