The Coronation of the Virgin by Filippo Lippi
A crowded heaven
God the Father crowns the kneeling Virgin at the top centre, and the space below fills with figures: angels in pale robes holding tall lilies, saints ranked on either side, and at the front a group of kneeling monks and donors. Lippi, a Carmelite friar himself, paints the court of heaven as a busy, festive crowd rather than the orderly tiers of the Gothic tradition. The faces are individual, the colours cool blues, whites and pinks.
The painter in the picture
At the lower left, a monk in a dark habit leans his cheek on his hand and looks out toward us. He is Lippi. Opposite, an angel holds a scroll reading Is perfecit opus — “he completed the work” — pointing at the kneeling figure of the canon who commissioned it, Francesco Maringhi. It is one of the earliest self-portraits in an Italian altarpiece.
Sant’Ambrogio
The altarpiece was made for the high altar of the convent church of Sant’Ambrogio in Florence and took Lippi eight years to complete.
Where it hangs
The altarpiece is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and measures 200 by 287 centimetres.
