The Adoration of the Magi by Peter Paul Rubens
Painted in a fortnight
Rubens painted this enormous panel — four and a half metres tall — in about two weeks in 1624, for the high altar of the abbey of St Michael in Antwerp, and it shows in the best way: everything is movement. The crowd comes down from the upper left, camels and turbans and torches, and the whole surge ends at a small child held up by his mother, who looks down at him with a slight, amused pride. The old king in red stands at the left with a golden cup, while a king in white and gold kneels before the Child.
The KMSKA
It stayed on the abbey's altar until the French Revolution, went to Paris, and came back to Antwerp in 1815, where it is one of the great Rubens panels in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.
