Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raphael
A wedding present
Raphael painted the Madonna del Cardellino for his friend Lorenzo Nasi's marriage in 1505 or 1506, in the Florentine years when he was learning from Leonardo. The pyramid of the three figures is Leonardo's; the calm is Raphael's own. Mary has been reading and looks down at the children; the little John the Baptist holds up a goldfinch, and Jesus reaches out to touch it. A goldfinch eats thistles, and by legend got its red face from Christ's blood at Calvary — every viewer of the time knew what the bird meant.
Broken and mended
In 1547 the Nasi house collapsed and the panel broke into seventeen pieces. It was nailed back together and repainted, and stayed that way — dull, cracked, its colour hidden — until a ten-year restoration finished in 2008 that returned it to something like the day it was delivered.
