Madonna Litta by Leonardo da Vinci: what it depicts
Madonna Litta by Leonardo da Vinci
A nursing Madonna
Mary feeds the Child, and looks down at him; he feeds, and looks out at us, one hand holding a goldfinch. Two windows open onto a landscape of blue mountains. The picture is small — not much bigger than a sheet of paper — and made for a private room, where it would be looked at from close by. The modelling of the Child's body is the part that convinces most people it is Leonardo's.
Whose hand?
The design is Leonardo's; the Hermitage, which owns it, gives him the painting too. Many scholars see his Milanese pupil Boltraffio in the execution, working from the master's drawings — one of which, a silverpoint study for Mary's head, is in the Louvre. It takes its name from the Litta family of Milan, who sold it to Tsar Alexander II in 1865.
About this print
Made from the Hermitage's photograph of the painting, 8,096 pixels tall.
