Christ on the Sea of Galilee by Eugène Delacroix: what it depicts
Christ on the Sea of Galilee by Eugène Delacroix
Asleep in the storm
The sea is the picture. Delacroix gives most of the canvas to green water and a sky the colour of slate, and the boat is small in it, its sail half down, the disciples rowing and bailing and shouting. In the stern, in red, Christ sleeps. The Gospel says they woke him and he said, "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?" — but Delacroix paints the moment before, when the storm is real and the sleeping man is the only calm thing in the world.
Six versions
He painted the subject at least six times, never twice the same, and painters admired these small canvases — van Gogh, in a letter from Arles, singled out "a little lemon yellow for the halo". This is one of the 1854 versions.
