Delacroix (1798–1863) led French Romantic painting: colour over line, movement over repose, the Old Masters — Rubens above all — over the academy. His religious pictures are few but fierce; the Christ on the Sea of Galilee, painted in six versions in the 1850s, is the one that stayed with painters from Manet to van Gogh.
