A crucifix in a field
Gauguin took the seventeenth-century wooden Christ from the chapel of Trémalo, near Pont-Aven, and set it outdoors in the autumn fields, and painted it the yellow of the fields. Three Breton women in white coifs kneel around it as they would at a Sunday calvary; behind, the trees are red and a man climbs over a wall. Nothing is modelled, everything is outlined and filled with flat colour, the way stained glass or a Japanese print is made. It is 1889, and this is where modern religious painting begins.
Buffalo
Bought in 1946 by the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York — now the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.
