Paul Gauguin

1 work in the collection

Gauguin (1848–1903) left the stock exchange for painting and Paris for Brittany and then Tahiti, looking for something older and plainer than the art around him. In Pont-Aven in 1889 he painted the peasant faith of Brittany in flat colour and heavy outline — the Yellow Christ, the Green Christ, the Vision after the Sermon — and changed what a religious picture could look like.
