Rising in stillness
Christ stands above the open tomb in an almond-shaped halo of light, holding a white banner with a red cross, surrounded by small angels. He does not leap or strain; he simply rises, calm and balanced. Below, the Roman soldiers who guarded the tomb lie asleep on the ground — one has just woken and turns away in fright.
A painter and his pupil
Tradition, recorded as early as the sixteenth century, holds that the sleeping soldier at the left is a portrait of the young Raphael, and that the startled one fleeing at the right is Perugino himself. Whether or not that is true, Raphael was in Perugino’s workshop at the time, and the picture belongs to the moment when master and pupil worked side by side.
San Francesco al Prato
It was painted for the church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia and is now in the Vatican Pinacoteca.
Where it hangs
The panel is in the Pinacoteca Vaticana in Rome and measures 233 by 165 centimetres.
