The Newborn by Georges de La Tour: what it depicts
The Newborn by Georges de La Tour
Is it a Nativity
There is no manger, no star, no ox, no halo. A young woman in a red dress holds a tightly swaddled baby on her lap and looks down at it; an older woman beside her — Anne, if this is Mary — holds a candle and shades it with her hand, so that the light falls on the child alone. La Tour never said what it was. Everyone who has stood in front of it since has known.
It is the quietest picture in French painting, and one of the most loved.
Rennes
Seized from a private collection in the Revolution and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes since 1794, long before anyone knew who had painted it.
