The Kiss of Judas by Giotto: what it depicts
The Kiss of Judas by Giotto
Two faces
Everything in the panel presses inward — spears, torches, clubs, helmets, a man in a hood pulling at a cloak — and at the middle of it Judas has thrown his yellow mantle around Christ and is bringing his face up to kiss him. Christ does not move. He looks at Judas, steadily, and Judas, mouth open, looks back. Giotto puts the two profiles a few inches apart and lets the whole betrayal happen in the space between them. At the left, Peter cuts off the servant's ear; nobody notices.
The Scrovegni Chapel
The panel is on the south wall of the chapel Enrico Scrovegni built in Padua, painted by Giotto around 1305 — the cycle that gave Western painting real bodies and real faces. This is one of the best-known scenes in it.
