The Descent from the Cross by Peter Paul Rubens: what it depicts
The Descent from the Cross by Peter Paul Rubens
The white sheet
Everything is on one diagonal, from the man on the cross at the top right down to the Magdalene at the bottom left, and the body of Christ slides along it on a white winding sheet eased down by eight people. Rubens had just come back from Italy and had Caravaggio's Entombment in his head; what he added was the sheet, which lights the whole picture, and the tenderness — John in red taking the weight, Mary reaching up, the Magdalene with the foot resting on her shoulder.
It was commissioned by the Antwerp guild of Arquebusiers, whose patron, Saint Christopher, is on the outside of the wings: everyone in the picture is carrying Christ.
Antwerp Cathedral
It hangs where it was made for, in the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, with its companion the Elevation of the Cross. A generation of English-speaking children knew it from A Dog of Flanders.
