The Deposition of Christ by Fra Angelico
Tuscany as Jerusalem
The body of Christ is being lowered from the cross by men on ladders, received by others at its foot, while on the left the holy women kneel with Mary, and on the right a group of well-dressed men stand talking. Behind them all is a landscape of hills, walled towns and cypresses that is plainly the country around Florence. Fra Angelico has set the most solemn moment in the Christian story in the view from his own window.
An altarpiece by two painters
It was commissioned for the Strozzi Chapel in Santa Trinita, Florence, from Lorenzo Monaco, who died having painted only the three pointed pinnacles at the top. Fra Angelico took over and completed the main panel. The join is visible if you look for it: the pinnacles are Gothic, flat and gold; the panel beneath opens into space and light.
Stillness
For all the figures, the mood is quiet. No one shrieks or tears their clothes. The composition turns on the long, pale diagonal of Christ’s body between the ladders, and the whole picture seems to hold its breath around it.
Where it hangs
The panel is in the Museo di San Marco in Florence and measures 275 by 285 centimetres.
