Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci: what it depicts
Salvator Mundi by Leonardo da Vinci
The Saviour of the World
Christ faces us directly, in the frontal pose traditional for the Salvator Mundi. His right hand is raised in blessing; his left holds a sphere of rock crystal, the world, and Leonardo painted the inclusions in the crystal with the attention he gave to everything. The blue robe has the crossed gold embroidery he used elsewhere; the face is soft to the point of dissolving, sfumato taken as far as it goes. It was painted around 1500, possibly for Louis XII of France.
Lost, found, sold
The picture vanished for centuries, was sold in 1958 for £45 as a copy, and re-emerged in 2005 under heavy overpaint. After cleaning it was exhibited at the National Gallery in London in 2011 as a Leonardo, and in 2017 it sold at Christie's for $450 million, the highest price ever paid for a painting. Some scholars accept it as entirely Leonardo's; others see the workshop in parts of it. It is now owned by the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi.
