Saint Francis in Prayer by Caravaggio: what it depicts
Saint Francis in Prayer by Caravaggio
A man and a skull
There is nothing here but a kneeling man, his patched habit, the skull he holds and looks at, and a cross of two rough sticks on the ground. The light comes from the left and stops at the edge of the habit; the rest is black. Caravaggio painted Francis more than once — perhaps, on one dating, while on the run from Rome after a killing in 1606 — and the pictures get plainer each time — this one is prayer stripped to its bones, which is what the skull is for.
