The title says carrying, but look at the hands: he holds the cross the way you would hold something you had chosen, lightly, almost tenderly, and his eyes are lifted and full of tears. There is no crowd, no road, no soldiers — only the crown of thorns, the red robe, and the long fingers on the wood. El Greco painted this composition many times in Toledo, and it became the standard Spanish image of the acceptance of the Passion.
