José Alcázar Tejedor (1850–1907) was born in Madrid and, with a stipend from the provincial government, studied at the Academia de San Fernando under Federico de Madrazo before going to Paris, where he worked with Vicente Palmaroli. A second stipend later took him to Rome.
He painted genre scenes, mostly religious in character. He first exhibited at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878, won a third-class medal there in 1881, the year he showed a sacristy scene in which a baptism and a funeral take place at once, now considered his principal work, and took a second-class medal in 1887 for a painting of parents rejoicing at their son's first Mass. He became a full professor at the fine arts school in Barcelona in 1902 and died in Madrid.
