The Virgin in Prayer by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato: what it depicts
The Virgin in Prayer by Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato
The blue Madonna
Nothing but Mary, against the dark: a white veil, a rose-red dress, and the great blue mantle, painted in real ultramarine so intense it seems lit from within. Her eyes are lowered and her hands are joined. There is no story, no child, no landscape — only the act of prayer, which is what makes it the picture people put on a wall to pray in front of.
Sassoferrato painted this subject many times; the National Gallery counts well over a dozen versions by his own hand. He worked in Rome in the middle of the seventeenth century, deliberately out of step with the Baroque around him, going back to Raphael and Perugino for a clarity the age had lost.
About this print
