An ordinary afternoon

Nothing sacred seems to be happening. The Christ Child stands between Joseph’s knees, holding a small bird up high; a little white dog sits looking at it with longing. Joseph smiles. Mary has stopped her spinning to watch, a basket of linen beside her. The whole picture is a domestic moment in a carpenter’s workshop, the kind any viewer would recognise.

Why that matters

That ordinariness is the devotion. The Counter-Reformation promoted Saint Joseph as a model father and the Holy Family as the model household, and Murillo — who knew the streets and homes of Seville better than any painter of his time — gave that idea its most human form. Joseph is not the old bystander of earlier art; he is the centre of the picture, young, strong and delighted with the child.

Early Murillo

It dates from around 1650, early in his career, and the handling is firmer and more naturalistic than the soft, glowing manner of his later years.

Where it hangs

The canvas is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid and measures 144 by 188 centimetres.
