The Holy Face (The Veil of Veronica) by Francisco de Zurbarán: what it depicts
The Holy Face (The Veil of Veronica) by Francisco de Zurbarán
A cloth on a wall
A white cloth hangs from two pins by knotted threads, against a wall of dark red. On it, so faint you have to look for it, is a face — eyes closed, the crown of thorns a smudge of ochre. Zurbarán painted the sudarium, the veil Veronica is said to have pressed to Christ's face on the road to Calvary, many times, and each time he made the cloth more real and the face less, until the picture is almost entirely folds of linen and the relic is what you cannot quite see.
It is the trompe-l'oeil of a relic, and a picture about looking for God.
