The weight of the body
The stone slab juts out toward us, and on it the body is being lowered — Nicodemus gripping the knees, John the shoulders, Christ's hand trailing to touch the stone. Above them the women rise in a diagonal of grief, Mary of Clopas with her arms thrown up. It is composed as a single falling movement, and the thing you feel first is weight: a dead man is heavy, and the men carrying him are ordinary men.
Rubens copied it. So, later, did Cézanne.
From the Chiesa Nuova to the Vatican
Painted for the Vittrice chapel in Santa Maria in Vallicella — the Chiesa Nuova of Saint Philip Neri — where it stood over the altar. Napoleon took it to Paris in 1797; it came back in 1817 and went to the Vatican, where it is now in the Pinacoteca. Many consider it Caravaggio's most perfectly finished altarpiece.
