Only the body

The canvas is long and low, and it holds nothing but the dead Christ stretched out on a white shroud over a stone slab. There are no mourners, no angels, no landscape. The body is pale and heavy, the head turned slightly toward us, the wounds visible but not dwelt on. The frame of the picture becomes the frame of a tomb.

For contemplation

Champaigne painted it for the convent of Port-Royal, where the nuns spent hours in silent prayer. The picture was made to be looked at slowly, the eye moving along the body from feet to face, as a meditation on the death of Christ and the reality of his humanity.

Stillness as reverence

The restraint is Champaigne’s great gift. Where Baroque painters in Italy and Spain sought drama, he found gravity in stillness and plainness. The shroud is painted with the same care he gave to the nuns’ habits — white on white, fold upon fold.

Where it hangs

The panel is in the Louvre and measures 68 by 197 centimetres.
