Saint Joseph and the Christ Child by Guido Reni: what it depicts
Saint Joseph and the Christ Child by Guido Reni
The father
Reni painted Joseph as tradition had him — old, white-bearded, a widower — and then gave him a tenderness the tradition had not: the child lies cradled in his arms, holding a piece of fruit up to him, and Joseph looks down with a face that has nothing in it but love and a little awe. The gold of the cloak fills the picture. It is the image of Saint Joseph that the Church's devotion to him, which grew enormously in the centuries after, has more or less adopted.
Reni's late manner
Guido Reni was the most celebrated painter in Italy in the 1630s, working in Bologna in the soft, silvery, idealised style that made his name a byword for grace. This canvas is one of several versions of the subject from his studio; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, holds it.
About this print
