Pietà (after Delacroix) by Vincent van Gogh: what it depicts
Pietà (after Delacroix) by Vincent van Gogh
Painted in the asylum
In September 1889, in the asylum at Saint-Rémy, van Gogh was copying prints of paintings he loved because he could not go out to paint. A lithograph of Delacroix's Pietà fell into some oil and paint and was spoiled, and he painted his own version of it — in his own colours, blue and yellow, with his own brushstrokes coiling through the rock behind. Christ has a red beard. Van Gogh had a red beard. He did not say it was a self-portrait, and nobody has needed him to.
It is one of only a handful of religious pictures he painted, and the most personal.
